Kevin McCord is the Director of Internal Audit for GE Capital’s portfolio of insurance companies. In addition to being a dedicated professional with 16 years of experience, Kevin is an avid golfer who enjoys sports and the outdoors in general. He created this blog to discuss this facet of his life. (For more about his career, visit his professional website.)

Kevin has played golf from a very young age. In fact, he cannot remember ever not having a golf club! Inspired by his father and grandfather, both of whom are/were avid golfers themselves, Kevin began playing as a child. After one memorable day when Kevin was nine years old, he was hitting golf balls in his backyard not thinking that he could hit one over the neighbor’s fence. Lo and behold, Kevin caught one right in the screws (yes, there were screws back then with his persimmon woods), and to Kevin’s amazement it sailed over the fence right into his neighbor’s yard and broke a window. From this experience, Kevin realized he had some talent in the sport and was hooked. He soon decided to pursue it on a more serious level, and when all was said and done as a kid and a teenager, Kevin won several junior tournaments and made the all-state team as a high school senior.

Nowadays, Kevin McCord plays in various Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) tournaments, such as qualifying tournaments for the MGA Mid-Amateur Championship, the Long Island Golf Association (LIGA) Mid-Amateur Championship, and the Bethpage State Park Club Championship. He also dabbled in the GolfWeek Amateur tour for a few years.

Kevin considers The Masters Tournament the best sporting event in the world, and yet not nearly as many people are into golf as they should be! Whether it’s because golf tends to be expensive or the sport takes too much time for the ordinary person, many people shy away from playing it themselves — which is the best way to gain an appreciation for the sport.

In addition to golf, Kevin McCord is a huge fan of camping and hiking. He has been to national parks all over the country, including the Great Smoky Mountains, various parks throughout California (Sequoia, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Yosemite, Redwoods, Lassen Volcanic), Utah (Arches, Canyonlands, Zion), Arizona (Grand Canyon), and Maine (Acadia). Camping and hiking is great for a person’s health, and Kevin loves to get out of the city, simply enjoy the outdoors, and actually see the stars.

An alum of the University of Georgia, Kevin is also an avid Southeastern Conference football fan. He typically watches on TV (hopefully with fellow UGA or South Carolina fans!), as it’s difficult to attend games in person now that he lives in New York City. Kevin also likes baseball and is a big fan of the Atlanta Braves.
